flat lay details of an elopement

Planning an elopement in Minnesota is one of the most beautiful and stress-free ways to get married. Whether you’re dreaming of exchanging vows in the North Shore forests, by a quiet lake, or at a courthouse ceremony, understanding the legal steps to get married in Minnesota is the first thing couples need to know.

As an elopement photographer who helps couples plan and document their day, I guide my couples through both the legal process and the experience of creating a meaningful wedding day.

This guide explains everything Minnesota couples need to know—from getting a marriage license to having a legal ceremony.

Step 1: Apply for a Minnesota Marriage License

Before you can get married, you must obtain a Minnesota marriage license from a county office.

Most counties use the Minnesota Official Marriage System, which allows couples to start the application online before visiting the courthouse.

Information you’ll need includes:
    •    Full legal names
    •    Current addresses
    •    Dates and places of birth
    •    Social Security numbers (if you have one)
    •    Valid government-issued ID
    •    Information about previous marriages (if applicable)

Completing the online portion usually takes 10–15 minutes.

After submitting the application, you’ll need to visit a county office to finalize it.

Step 2: Visit the County Office Together

Most counties require both partners to appear in person to complete the application and receive the license.

Bring the following:
    •    Valid photo identification (driver’s license or passport)
    •    Social Security numbers
    •    Payment for the license fee

Minnesota Marriage License Fee

The cost is typically:
    •    $115–$125 standard fee
    •    $40–$50 if you complete 12 hours of premarital counseling

The counseling option is optional but can significantly reduce the fee.

Appointments at the county office usually take 15–30 minutes.

Step 3: Receive Your Marriage License

In most Minnesota counties, couples receive their marriage license the same day they apply.

Important things to know:
    •    The license is valid for 6 months
    •    You can use it anywhere in Minnesota
    •    There is no residency requirement, so couples from out of state can marry here

This makes Minnesota an excellent state for destination elopements.

Step 4: Have Your Ceremony

Once you have your license, you can legally get married anywhere in the state.

Your ceremony must be performed by one of the following:
    •    A judge
    •    A licensed officiant
    •    A religious leader
    •    An ordained minister

Minnesota also requires:
    •    Two witnesses who are at least 16 years old

Many couples choose to keep the ceremony simple and intimate, especially for elopements.

Courthouse ceremonies often last 5–15 minutes, while outdoor elopements can be as relaxed or adventurous as you want.

I offer officiating services for free when couples book with me!

Step 5: Signing and Filing the Marriage License

After the ceremony:
    1.    The officiant and witnesses sign the marriage license.
    2.    The officiant returns the signed license to the county.
    3.    The county records the marriage.

This usually happens within five days after the ceremony.

Once recorded, couples can request certified copies of their marriage certificate.

The Fastest Way to Elope in Minnesota

One of the best things about getting married in Minnesota is how quick the process can be.

Some couples choose to:
    •    Apply for the license in the morning
    •    Pick it up the same day
    •    Have their ceremony later that afternoon

Because there is no long waiting period, it’s possible to legally marry the same day you receive your license.

Why Couples Choose to Elope in Minnesota

Minnesota offers incredible natural beauty for intimate weddings and elopements.

Some of the most popular elopement settings include:
    •    Northern forests and pine trees
    •    Lake shorelines and cliffs
    •    Waterfalls and scenic overlooks
    •    Quiet state parks
    •    Courthouse ceremonies in historic towns

For couples who want a stress-free wedding day focused on their connection, eloping allows them to slow down and truly experience the moment.
